Roofers measure in squares, and one square is 100 square feet of roof. The size of box you need comes down to how many squares are coming off and how many layers of shingles there are.
For one layer on an average house, a 15-yard usually takes the whole thing. A big roof, a second layer, or a tear-off that includes the decking goes in a 20.
